Biigtigong Nishnaabeg

The people of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg have been living within their traditional territory since time immemorial. There is a feeling amongst the members that this will continue for many generations to come. Traditional values, culture and way of life must be protected for the benefit of future generations.

In order to achieve this goal, the First Nation will build Biigtigong Endzhi-gkinoohmaading, an education centre that will not only provide standardized elementary school programming from the Ministry of Education in Ontario, but also integrate Ojibway culture and traditions that have been in place for thousands of years.

Project Overview

BD Cardinal & Associates Inc., Four Winds Consulting and S. Burnett & Associates Limited are currently preparing the design for the new 41,000 sq. ft. Biigtigong Endzhi-gkinoohmaading. The facility will provide a new education model, developed exclusively around their own culturally appropriate Anishinabek curriculum, and will provide a long term education plan for the reserve meeting the First Nation educational needs. Programs include a daycare, kindergarten, classrooms for grades 1-8 as well as providing spaces for adult education, career training, conference facilities, and a recreation centre.

Designed to encompass the philosophy of the seven Grandfather teachings, the facility is in the form of an eagle protecting its young. Separate entrances are provided for the children and adults and the building is orientated in the Cardinal directions. In the centre of the building will be a cultural teaching space surrounded by 13 columns paying homage to a traditional wigwam hut. The Hut will be clad with birch bark and surrounded by a display of cultural artifacts which will be used in the teaching of traditional knowledge.
